What considerations are you keeping at the front of your mind? How are you planning ahead to make sure these considerations don't cause any issues? How might they impact your timeline? And, how are you preparing yourself and your production to avoid speed bumps?

The first thing coming to mind is what happens at the beginning of every project – WOW, I am overwhelmed... and even questioning why I am a filmmaker. Okay, that aside, I am thinking about how to streamline the planning process. It is a little more difficult with a documentary. Planning shoot dates will really rely on me knowing the story... and because this story is still in development, it is hard to plan for something that I do not know yet what the full story is. I will likely end up gathering all media over the next 10+ months on a month-to-month basis. All this in hopes of officially having a grasp on the story once all footage is gathered.

Planning ahead can only be done to a certain extent. I would hope to be able to have a better plan this summer when I can get some time to sit with the idea for a minute. This semester has had its ups and downs... excuses aside, dealing with burnout at this moment in time. I am hoping to once again find passion for this idea, among others, once the summer break comes. Hoping for some time to reflect on the idea a bit more before pushing forward.

The best way I believe to avoid speed bumps is to start with a realistic idea of what is achievable. So many times, I've tried stretching myself thin just to get through and it never turns out quality art. I like to have control of every part of my art... so, therefore its likely going to take me longer to accomplish something that could have taken a team of people to do. It's hard for me to release control on anything these days... I'm working on it.

  1. I'm overwhelmed, too, but my overwhelm stems from a lot of personal stuff at the moment that keeps infringing on everything. I do have the opposite problem about control--I'd LOVE it for someone to come in and take over some of this work so I can focus on one thing at a time. The one thing I do know right now, especially regarding scheduling, is I'm looking forward to May 2024. I just hope I can physically make it until then. Geez. --Carrah

  2. Often times its the pre-production planning that quells some of the overwhelm. Plans can change, but having a starting point can be very helpful in calming the nerves. It helps you get a clear idea of what's coming down the pipeline. :)
