Producers lead by example. Having read the article, what are three ways you can create more diversity and inclusion for your current project's casting/subject research? How can this leadership mindset make your project stronger? (150+ word response)
There are many ways to make my process more inclusive. First, having an open mind has always been important to me with anything creative. Everyone comes with their own unique values – finding ways to utilize anyone strengths is only going to be a positive thing on any project.
Second, thinking outside the box of what is written on the page. My summer one film proved this to work to my advantage. I went into the casting process with my main character being cisgender male but on the casting call I opened the call to all genders and identities for the lead role. Ultimately, a female actress was chosen for the lead as well as her daughter for a younger version of the lead. This helped me with a few things, the two actresses (mother/daughter) came as a package deal and didn't require me to cast a younger version of my lead. It also helped my lead vision herself while in scenes having to become emotional about things that happened to the character in the past. She was able to vision these things happening to her daughter; I believe this helped her performance. And last, this role did not require the lead to be any gender, I simply went into the process in search of someone who I knew could play the lead. Having an open mind helped me in that process.
Lastly, I think one thing that I could work on when writing would be to expand my knowledge of other cultures, gender identities, and social groups. If I am not familiar with these groups I simply don't know how to write something true to life and not be insensitive to those individuals. So it's on me to do my due diligence before entering a character that I, myself, have less experience with. But this also begs the question – who am I to tell these stories that are not inside my own social, gender, and cultural identities? As a white cisgender male, who am I to be able to explore these topics that I am not a part of said groups?
Your previous summer project example is really interesting. Opening the casting process up allowed you to find more actors and help them once they were cast.
ReplyDeleteDusty, I think by co-directing, co-writing, an co-producing with different filmmakers can expand upon that knowledge you talked about. In a way, sharing stories this way can help teach us about different experiences from a variety of individuals.
